Since 1805 that was almost the beginning of the formation of the Italian Kingdom the formation of the Army Corps infantry had began. The infantry consisted of the line and the light regiments. In 1805 the number of regiments of the light infantry was 2 and the number of the line infantry was 5. The number of the battalions of all the regiments was the same - 2.
The number of people in companies of all regiments – the Carabinier and the Grenadier companies had 83 people. Fuzilier’s andvoltigeur’s companies of the line infantry regiments had 123 people. In the light infantry there were 123 people in huntsman’s and voltigeur’s companies. The number of companies in the whole infantry regiments was similar. But they were called in a different way and perform different functions under the Charter of the Infantry service.
That’s how the line infantry battalion consisted of 8-companies of the Fusiliers (fucilleri), 1 company of the Grenadier (granatieri), one company of the (volteggiatore ). The light regiments consisted of 8 huntsmen (cacciatore) companies, one company Carabinier (carabiniere) and one company of voltigeurs (volteggiatore).
In 1806, all the regiments of infantry got the 3rd battalion. The number of regiments had been constantly changing. The Royal Istrian battalion was formed the same year. But it had been disbanded in 1809 and the personnel were distributed between the 1st and the 2nd light regiments. The Royal Dalmatian legion which was numbering 738 people was organized in 1806 but already in 1808 it was transformed into the Royal regiment of Dalmatia.
In 1807, the Royal Regiment of Brescia Rangers was renamed as the 3rd Regiment of the Light Infantry.
1808 was the year of the formation of the 7th regiment of the line infantry of the former papal troops. All the regiments were underwent a transformation again in the quantitative composition.
5 battalions were added and one of them was a spare one by the French model. The number of companies in the combat battalions was 6. 2 companies of them were considered to be elite. They were called as the grenadier’s and the voltigeur’s regiments. The regiments of the light infantry got exactly the same structure, but they were called in a different way. The elite companies of the light infantry were called as the Carabinier and the voltigeur’s. The number of people in companies and regiments of the line and light infantries was 140 people per company.
The regimental artillery of the infantry was attached to all the parts of the Kingdom of Italy. It means in 1810 the army had seven line and three light infantry regiments.
Throughout 1811, on the eve of the war with Russia there was formed the 4th regiment of light infantry, consisting of five battalions and an artillery company.
Also this year a battalion of the National Guard of Milan (Battaglione Guardia allaCitta di Milano) was formed. It consisted of 6 companies, two of them were considered to be elite. The separate company of sappers and firefighters of Milan was attached here. A little bit laterthe second battalion of veterans was added.
At the end of the year each "department" had to submit and to form one company of militia for the defense of the company’s territory. The number of people in companies was ranged from 120 to 240 people.
Basically, the army turned out from disorganized, undisciplined people who have never shot, into the strong and unified body that represented the real threat.
