The grenadier Guards battalion was organized in 1809 like the most of the regiments of the army. The composition was determined in the amount of one combatant battalion (of 700 people) and one spare company.
The battalion was able to have 6 drill companies of 116 people each and the same number of people in the personnel of the spare company.
The bear hats with red plumes and cords, the stems of the hats were yellow with the picture of grenade were laid to the Guards of the Grenadiers.
According to the status the Grenadiers Guards Battalion was considered as the first among the infantry battalions of the Guard.
By 1812 the number of members of the battalion was increased to one drill battalion and one spare company, in which there were 837 soldiers and officers.
The number of companies in the battalion remained as it was - 6, but the number of people in each of the companies now increased and reached 139 people. In the spare company there were also 139 people.
The Grenadiers Guards battalion of 27 officers and 805 established men went Russia under the command of Major Charles M. Von Mülheim. The regiment was a part of the 24th Division of Major-General Baron von Adam L. Ochs, which in turn belonged to the First Brigade that was under the command of Brigadier General E.Legra .
Together with its corps the battalion took part in the battles in Valutina Mountain on August 19, 1812, in Borodino on September 7, 1812 and on the Berezina on November 26-28, 1812
