The Kingdom of Italy. The Cavalry.

In four months after the formation of the Kingdom of Italy, on July 3, 1805 the Hussars regiments were transferred to the dragoons.

The 1st Hussars regiment was transformed into the Dragoon Queen’s regiment - Dragoni della Regina.

The 2nd Hussars regiment was transformed into the dragoons of Napoleon - Dragoni Napoleone.

The regiment of mounted rangers was renamed as the Royal Italian rangers.

Each regiment consisted of 4 squadrons that divided into 2 companies with 116 people in each.

A year later, in 1806, in each regiment there were formed spare doubleregiment squadrons with 27 people in both companies.

The second regiment of horse rangers – the Reale Principe - appeared in 1808. In 1810 they got the number 2. The re-organized horse rangers’ regiment – the Reale Italiano- got the number 1. A little later, there was organized the third regiment which didn’t get a number.

By 1810 the number of soldiers in the companies was changed. It was increased to 132. But people of a spare company were reduced to 21.

In 1811 there was formed the 4th cavalry regiment of rangers, and in 1812 - all the spare companies joined the "General depot" cavalry rangers.

Except the dragoons’ regiments that were in the Guard Cavalry Brigade, two horse rangers’ Regiment (the 2nd and the 3rd) took part in the Russian campaign.

- the 13th (Italian) Light Horse Brigade of Brigadier General of the Italian Kingdom Baron Giovanni B. von Villatburga.

- the 2nd Regiment of the horse rangers of the Crown prince- Reale Principe, consisting of the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th squadrons numbering 39 officers and 608 established men. They were under the command of Colonel A. Blanko.

- the 3rd regiment of the horse rangers, consisting of the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th squadrons numbering 33 officers and 601 established men. They were under the command of baron of the Italian kingdom Colonel Gabriel P. P. Rambourg.

The Cavalry regiments participated in various battles before and after the Russian Campaign.

- the 1st Dragoon Queen’s regiment - in Kohlberg, Stralsund, Montebello, Tavernelle, Olmo, the Piave, Raab, Wagram, Maloyaroslavetz, Viazma, Dukhovshchina, Red, Santa Saren, Veyzelburg.

-the 2nd regiment of the Dragoons of Napoleon – in Kohlberg, Stralsund, Sacile, Kardadbe, Mulins de Ré, Vails, Raab, Vish, Tortosa, Tarragona, Sagurtum, Valencia, Las Rosas, San Pelayo, Lutz, Bautzen, Leipzig, Hanau, Cave.

- the 1st regiment of horse -regiment Reale Italiano, - in Kohlberg, Mataro, Gerona, Kardalia, Mulens de Ré, Vails, Malgera, Raab, Wagram, Tortosa, Parma, Tarot.

- the 2nd Regiment of horse rangers Reale Principe- in Piav, Klaugenfurt, Raab, Borodino, Maloyaroslavetz, Viazma, Dukhovshchina, Krasnoye.

- the 3rd Regiment of horse rangers – in Borodino, Maloyaroslavetz, Viazma, Dukhovshchina, Krasnoye, Mincio, Tarot.

- the 4th Regiment of horse rangers – in Bautzen, Elsan, Kalbdiero, Mincio, Parma.

The Italian corps that was under the command of Eugene Beauharnais crossed the Neman River on June 30, 1812 in the village of Prena.

Passing the entire campaign, participating in various battles, experiencing all the hardships of retreat the corps retain order and organization.

On December 12, 1812 the remains of the corps of the Italian Kingdom were able to cross the border of the Russian Empire near Kovno.

On December 31, 1812 only 452 people of the entire corps gathered in Marienwerder.




The Large and Small buttons of the " Reggimento Dragoni " of the Italian Army.

The buttons were produced by casting in metal molds. The inscription on the buttons shows a soldier belonging to the regiment of the Italian Army " Reggimento Dragoni ". The inscription is made as a monogram with the intertwined letters D R.

These buttons belong to the regiment, which was in the Guards brigade of cavalry, but at the same time was not a regiment of the Guards. Therefore, the buttons of this regiment can be attributed to the cavalry of the Italian Army. The regiment passed the whole way with its corps. The findings at the places of Vitebsk and Smolensk battles and some of the findings in the direction to Moscow confirm it.

The Buttons of the Regiment " Reggimento Dragoni " of the Italian army encountered in single copies, so their rarity can be evaluated as R 4 by the scale of rarity from 0 to 5.

Only a few copies were found in the area of Vitebsk and a few in the Smolensk region.

The buttons of smaller diameter catches more. Although the tin buttons and the other parts of the uniform that made from tin just crumble and become completely unavailable to historians and collectors.

Only thanks to several people who invest their knowledge, experience and skills in it, the tin buttons are given a new life. The officers’ buttons are found only in single copies and their rarity can be evaluated only theoretically.
