The regiment has its origins in 1793.
The basis for the 8 - th regiment of light infantry soldiers served Legion Franche Etrangere.

After the defeat of Napoleon's first abdication and the regiment was called Rgt 8e Leger in the army of King Louis XVIII in 1814.
