The Kingdom of Westphalia. The jagers -carabineers’ battalion.

The Elite part of the jagers- Carabineers (Jager-Karabiners) was founded in 1809 as part of the 1st drill Battalion consisting of 4 companies with 100 people in each. The foresters’ children were recruited for this part as the soldiers. After the service in the battalion the former soldiers had an advantage for admission to the civil service as the foresters.

By 1812 the battalion has changed, the number of people in it increased to 600. The number of companies did not change, only the composition increased up to 150 people in each company.

The personnel of the battalion was armed with rifled chokes.

On June 25, 1812 in the ranks there were 28 officers and 641 established men.

The battalion was under the command of a battalion chief V. E. L. von Hesberg.

Being in the eighth corps of the Grand Army, the battalion was not formally included in the Guard, but acted as a part of the 1st Infantry Brigade commanded by General E. Legras that was a part of the 24th Infantry Division commanded by General-Baron Adam L. von Ochs.

The battalion fought at Valutina Mountain on August 19, 1812; at Borodino on September 7 and on the Berezina on November 26-28.

After Napoleon's defeat the remnants of jagers were disbanded and returned to civilian life.

Large and small buttons of jagers-Carabineers’ battalion of Westphalian Army.

The buttons are made by casting, followed by pressing the figure with the initials JN on them that represents the capital letters of the name of the King of Westphalia - Joseph Napoleon. The letters are written in jager’s horn that means the light infantry.

The whole composition is framed with stylized laurel wreath. The Shako sign was also made in the classic French style. The sign on shako was made of brass by stamping and had the shape of the Roman shield-Pölten. On the shield there is the inscription "Chasseur-Carabiner de Legere". In the center of the shield there is a jager’s horn, where the letters “J N” are inscribed.

On the shield-Pölten there sits the imperial eagle. This sign is extremely rare and known only in one copy.

The regimental buttons of rangers-Carabineers battalion of Westphalian Army are very rare, so their rarity can be evaluate as R 4 by the scale of rarity from 0 to 5.

Several of these buttons have been found near the town of Lida, which is on the way from Grodno, where the Westphalian corps was situated for some time. It also shouldn’t be forgotten that the buttons of larger diameter were much less on the uniform and therefore they are less likely to be occurred.

The officer’s buttons are found only in single copies and we can assess their rarity only approximately.
